Tucked into the rolling farmland of eastern Maple Ridge, Sunflower Cafe is the kind of place you stumble on once and think about for months. It's not a restaurant with a farm attached, it's a working organic farm that happens to serve one of the most memorable meals in Metro Vancouver. If you're following the Cozy City trail this season, this stop is worth building an entire afternoon around.
The Concept
Sunflower Cafe was built on a simple idea: bring the tables to the farm instead of bringing the farm to the tables. Guests dine outdoors, seated in flower-wrapped gazebos or under an open-air canopy, close enough to the fields that the produce on your plate was likely growing a few steps away that same morning. There's no pretending here, the dining room is the garden.
The Farm
The cafe sits on a working organic farm where the chef and farm team grow more than 200 varieties of vegetables, herbs, and flowers across the property. Menus shift daily depending on what's ready to harvest, which means no two visits, even a week apart, quite taste the same. It's farm-to-table in the most literal sense: the kitchen builds each night's dishes around whatever the land is offering that day, not the other way around.
The Tasting Menu
Five courses. $89.

The tasting menu is the best way to experience what the farm and kitchen do together, a curated, ever-changing lineup built to showcase the season at its peak. Expect thoughtful, produce-forward plates that let a single vegetable or herb take the spotlight, paired with BC-sourced meats and seafood rounding things out. It's the kind of menu where the "simple" tomato salad ends up being the dish you can't stop talking about.
The Purple Drink: Lavender Earl Grey Sour
Fitting right into this season's theme, Sunflower Cafe's Lavender Earl Grey Sour is a soft violet-hued cocktail that leans into the farm's own lavender beds, earl grey tea, lavender, and a citrus-forward sour base come together for something floral, balanced, and unmistakably purple. It's the kind of drink that photographs as beautifully as it drinks, and a natural pairing for a Cozy City stop.
Getting There, and Making a Day of It
Sunflower Cafe sits in Whonnock, in eastern Maple Ridge, about an hour from downtown Vancouver. Because it's a bit of a drive, it's worth planning the visit as a half-day trip rather than a quick stop.
Whonnock Lake is the natural companion to a Sunflower Cafe visit and just minutes away. It's a small, warm, sand-bottomed lake known locally as one of Maple Ridge's better-kept summer secrets, quieter and shallower than the glacier-fed lakes nearby, with a sandy beach, docks, and a lakeside boardwalk lined with white water lilies. It's an easy place to spend a couple of hours before or after dinner: swim, paddle a canoe or kayak, or just walk the shoreline.
The secret spot: for those willing to wander a little further, the North Beach Trail follows the water past the main park to a quieter, less-visited stretch of shoreline, a good option if you want the lake experience without the crowds around the main beach and playground.
A simple plan for the day
- Afternoon: Head out early and swim or paddle at Whonnock Lake, then follow the North Beach Trail if you want a quieter corner of the water.
- Golden hour: Arrive at Sunflower Cafe for a gazebo table as the light softens over the fields.
- Evening: Settle into the five-course tasting menu, sip a Lavender Earl Grey Sour, and let the farm serve you the best of what it grew that day.
